    History

Ingesec does not come from roasting. It arrives there from the bottom of the chain, and that explains everything else. Promain Ingeniería Ltda has made machines for the Colombian coffee sector since the early 1970s, under the registered trademark Ingesec. Its original trade is the farm: Gaviota pulpers, dryers, hullers (trilladoras, in Spanish) that remove the parchment, the dry envelope around the bean. In 1990, it complemented this work by designing beneficio ecológico equipment, a coffee processing that uses far less water than classic washing. The turning point came from a license. In October 1995, the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia authorized it to produce and sell the Becolsub modules, in Colombia and abroad. These modules were designed by Cenicafé, the coffee research center based in Chinchiná. Manufacturing under license a national public technology settles it durably. Fifteen years of joint work with Cenicafé follow, on post-harvest. Roasting comes afterward, as a logical extension: since the workshop already equips the farm, it works its way up to the cup, hulling, roasting, grinding, packaging and cupping laboratory. The engineer Nelson Moya Moya runs the company.

    What it makes

Two heating principles coexist, and they do not make the same coffee. The ING-ROAST series works as a fluid bed, which the manufacturer describes as a suspended bed with radial movement. The bean is lifted and tumbled by a stream of hot air, thus heated by convection, almost without touching the metal. Natural gas or propane. A two-horsepower high-pressure centrifugal fan pushes the air. A chimney cyclone evacuates the combustion gases. It retains along the way the silverskin, that fine skin that detaches from the bean during roasting. Cooling is done by fan and agitators. A touch-screen programmable controller drives the curves. The ING-NMR series works with a horizontal drum, on LPG or propane. The manufacturer claims both conduction and convection there: the bean touches the hot wall, and rotation tumbles it again in the air. Cooling there is independent of the drum, which makes it possible to chain batches. The software accepts manual or automatic mode, up to twelve time-and-temperature segments per curve, and stores ten curves. Around these two lines, the company also makes the upstream and the downstream. Pulpers, Becolsub and Ecoing modules, rectangular and circular dryers, exchangers. Then hullers, grading screens and disc mills. It even goes as far as its own stainless steel sampling probe, for the laboratory.

    The models

Fluid bed, ING-ROAST series: models 12, 25 and 50. Only the first is documented, and by an old manufacturer page, under its former name ING-ROST-12. Twelve kilos of green coffee per batch, fifteen to eighteen minutes of roasting. Natural gas or propane, two-horsepower fan. The capacities of the 25 and 50 are published nowhere. The number in the name probably means kilos per batch, by analogy with the 12, but the company does not confirm it. Drum, ING-NMR series: models 6 and 12. The NMR-12 is given for twelve kilos of green coffee per batch, on LPG or propane. The machine weighs 700 kilos and measures 230 by 130 by 225 centimeters. Separate cooling allows four batches per hour. Around it: ING-M-120 disc mill, 120 kilos, up to 140 kilos per hour at medium grind, three-horsepower motor, which replaces the old ING-M-140. ING-T-80 hullers, 80 kilos of dry parchment per hour, and ING-T-200 for naturals and honeys, 200 kilos of dry parchment or 130 kilos of natural per hour. ING-UT-80, 200, 400 and 1000 hulling units. ING-MO-80, 400 and 800 grading screens, the latter at 800 kilos of green coffee per hour. In the laboratory, ING-C-250 sample huller, 250 grams of dry parchment per minute for 22 kilos of machine. Finally, beware of the San Franciscan SF-1 and SF-6: Ingesec distributes them, it does not build them.

    What you gain

The fluid bed keeps the bean away from the metal. The coffee is held in suspension in the hot air, so it heats by convection without resting on a scorching wall. There is no side more cooked than the other, and the radial agitation exposes every bean to the same temperature. The cyclone carries off the silverskin as it goes, so that it does not burn in the chamber and does not taint the batch. Finally, the same Bogotá workshop makes the pulper, the dryer and the huller: a single company answers for the whole chain, parts included.

    What you lose

A fluid bed imposes its air. It takes a two-horsepower high-pressure centrifugal fan and a cyclone just to hold twelve kilos in suspension. That means volume, noise, and a large airflow to heat. The dominant convection gives a profile that does not carry over as is to a drum, where conduction does most of the work. The NMR drum, for its part, weighs 700 kilos and occupies 230 by 130 centimeters for twelve kilos per batch. Above all, the published documentation is thin and faulty: the NMR 6 and 12 show the same figures.

Gray areaThe founding year is established by no register, and the figure given here is a reconstruction that must be read as such. The company publishes no date. Two archived texts allow working back. A page online in August 2003 says “for thirty years,” a revised version, online by July 2006 at the latest, says “for thirty-two years.” Both point to the early 1970s, and 1973 is where they meet. But these are round numbers that the company gives of itself, with no deed or registration to support them, and the comparison of archive fingerprints shows that the second sentence stayed frozen from 2006 to 2020 at least. The date is therefore plausible, not certain. The current site says “more than forty years,” which remains compatible without settling anything. Second reservation, more serious for anyone consulting the source: the Sobre nosotros page of the current site displays a timeline that has nothing to do with this company. It reads 1985, 1987, 2000, an agreement in 2007 with PPFGH, a GoldenTex prize in 2008, a collaboration in 2012 with OOKLPL, and a “CEO: Steven Rogers.” It is the demonstration content, never replaced, of a site template sold for the textile industry. The Services page of the same site still contains placeholder Latin and five office addresses in New York, Indiana and Georgia. None of these dates was retained, and none should be. Third point, a correction: nothing on the site speaks of induction heating. The word appears on no page consulted. The ING-NMR drums are given on LPG or propane, and the fluid beds on natural gas or propane. The idea of a line of induction-heated drums could not be verified and nothing supports it. Fourth, the product documentation is faulty in places. The ING-NMR-6 and ING-NMR-12 sheets show exactly the same figures, twelve kilos per batch, 700 kilos, same dimensions, which is obviously a data-entry error: the real capacity of the NMR-6 remains unknown, six kilos being probable without being confirmed. The Description tab of the ING-ROAST-12 sheet displays the text of a Gaviota pulper, cylinder, jacket and shim calibration, copied from another sheet. The capacities of the ING-ROAST-25 and 50 are given nowhere, and the full specifications of the fluid bed come from a 2011 page under the former name ING-ROST-12: nothing guarantees they still hold for the current model. Fifth, the abbreviation NMR is explained on no page. The initials of Nelson Moya Moya are an obvious reading, but only a supposition. It is also unknown whether he founded the company or took it over: he is attested here only as current manager. The relationship between the Ingesec brand and the legal entity Promain Ingeniería Ltda is not clear either. The old site wrote “INGESEC-PROMAIN LTDA” as a single word, the current site presents Ingesec as a registered trademark of Promain Ingeniería Ltda. If there were two entities and then a merger, nothing says so. No registration number was found on the site. Sixth, the distribution figures are the company's own and were not cross-checked: 27 countries and more than a thousand pieces of equipment installed today, 1500 customers and a different list of countries on the 2003 page. Finally, no patent search could be run and no independent source could be consulted, this session's search quota being exhausted. Colombian trade press, archives of the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros, Cenicafé publications and the company register therefore remain to be combed. Everything that appears here comes from the manufacturer itself, in its current version or its archived versions.
