Watercolor companion to the previous one, showing the same coffee plant at the fruit stage. The stem, almost vertical, bears along its whole length tight clusters of two-toned cherries, bright red on the side exposed to light and golden yellow at the base, while the dark green foliage is concentrated at the top of the branch. The name of the plant, written in pen at the bottom of the sheet, has almost faded.

A freshly felled and burned forest slope, bristling with fallen trunks and stumps, where about thirty men in light shirts and straw hats dig planting holes in regular lines along the slope. Nothing is green yet: the image shows the zero state of a plantation, the forest destroyed before the first coffee plant is put in the ground.

Black-and-white illustration from a travel book of 1893, captioned in English. A staircase of narrow terraces planted with coffee plants climbs a small valley toward a village clinging to the rock, dominated by a sandstone peak crowned with a watchtower. Two men work halfway up a terrace bench; in the foreground, a man armed with a stick, a child and a veiled woman climb the path. The plate shows what photographs of coffee rarely show: mountain coffee growing built on dry-stone terraces.

Sheet 1 of Jabez Burns's patent. At the bottom, the longitudinal section of the drum housed in its hatched brick furnace, with the discharge cone folded down to the left; at the top, the end view of the machine, the drum seen as a circle in the middle of its frame. This is the arrangement that makes it possible, for the first time, to empty the roasted coffee without taking the drum out of the fire. The inventor's signature is at the bottom right, opposite the signature of the two witnesses.
