Five tools
The water mineralization calculator, which lives in plate XIV, and four standalone applications written for the counter and for training: a quiz of 869 questions, a recipe calculator with diagnosis, a scenario game, and a settings guide for automatic machines. All four applications work offline once loaded and keep their data in the browser.

Twelve profiles, from the SCA reference to the published recipes of Rao, Perger and Barista Hustle. You set the hardness, the alkalinity, the share of magnesium and the sodium; it gives the salts to weigh for a concentrate, the resulting ionic composition, and places your water in the SCA and SCAE zones.
Open
869 questions in 27 categories, from botany to roasting, from cost price to legislation. Four modes: the ten-question skirmish, the dungeon of up to a hundred questions with three lives, the quest on a theme, and the daily quest, one game per day.
Open
The recipe calculator, espresso and filter: dose, ratio, grind, time, temperature, then a diagnosis that starts from the defect perceived in the cup and works back to the setting to correct.
Open
Sixteen missions and fourteen counter constraints, with or without a machine. You draw a card, announce what you keep stable and which levers you touch; the tool answers what a trainer would have done, and says why a lever cannot produce the requested effect. Five levers, each with its cost at the counter.
Open
For automatic machines with a grinder: the recommended starting setting according to the machine and the coffee, the reading of symptoms, and express maintenance.
Open01What they do
| Tool | What it gives |
|---|---|
| Water calculator | 12 profiles, the salts to weigh, the zone reached |
| Quiz | 869 questions, 27 categories, 4 modes |
| Barista Pocket | espresso and filter recipe, then diagnosis |
| Mission and Constraint | 30 practical cases, 5 levers and their cost, log |
| Auto machine | starting setting, symptoms, maintenance |
The water calculator starts from your targets, total hardness and alkalinity in parts per million of calcium carbonate, share of magnesium in the hardness, split between sulfate and chloride, target sodium, and returns the salts to weigh for a concentrate of the size and dose you choose. It subtracts what your starting water already contains, displays the resulting ionic composition and places the result in the SCA zone, which aims at taste, and in the SCAE zone, which aims at keeping machines alive. It reproduces the four recipes published by Gagné to within a tenth of a gram.
The quiz draws its questions from a bank of 869 entries spread over 27 categories, from green coffee to marketing, and is played in four modes. Barista Pocket calculates an espresso or filter recipe, then works the other way: you describe what is in the cup, too bitter, too sour, flow too fast, and it traces back to the responsible setting. Mission and Constraint sets thirty counter situations: you announce what you keep stable and which of the five levers (grind, ratio, dose, temperature, routine) you will touch, then the tool compares your answer with a trainer’s, quantifies what each lever costs in counter time, and explains, where relevant, why a lever cannot produce the requested effect. It keeps a log of the games. Auto machine is for those who set up an automatic machine with a grinder.
02What was checked before publishing them here
The four applications were hosted on a service that inserted a third-party audience tracker into every page; it has been removed, along with the sharing metadata that pointed to that service. Nothing leaves the visitor’s browser any more: quiz scores, the game log and saved settings stay in the local storage of their own browser. A single external dependency remains, the charting library that Barista Pocket uses.
Their arithmetic was then redone independently and checked against the site’s plates, which brought out seven errors, all corrected: an espresso diagnosis that did not react to extraction time, two contradictory brewing windows displayed on the same screen, a ratio safeguard skipped outside the window, a pre-infusion time inverted relative to the roast, a detection of contradictory requests that could never trigger, and the absence of a warning on the setting of the grind ring, which can only be turned while the grinder is running.
