History
Two people, two machines ready for delivery, and an idea that exists nowhere else: a fluid bed heated by a wood pellet burner, with fume oxidation built into the combustion chamber. Einar and Martin Björkman registered Nordre Roasters AB on May 19, 2021; the prototypes were built in a basement until 2023, with the support of the Vinnova program “Rosta med pellets” and of the Swedish Energy Agency. On March 20, 2026, the company published its measurements: development completed, one machine in service at Gringo Nordic.
Three things to unpack. The fluid bed, where air lifts the beans without a hot wall. The pellet, carbon neutral since the carbon is released by the tree that captured it. And the built-in oxidation, which burns the volatile compounds of roasting in the chamber and eliminates the separate afterburner, usually the most expensive item; the chaff of the bean is reinjected after the burner and becomes fuel.

The models
EMBLA: 1 to 15 kg per batch, 6 to 10 minutes, less than 2 m² of floor space, can be split into two blocks, about 0.48 kWh per kilo roasted against 2 to 2.5 for a gas drum with afterburner, emissions announced as well below the thresholds of the Ecodesign Directive.
What you gain
Pure convection with no hot spot, short times, natural removal of the chaff; a fuel that meets a dual constraint, regulatory and economic; and the elimination of a piece of equipment that is costly to buy as well as to use, something all the other manufacturers handle with a separate appliance.
What you lose
A pellet burner has far greater inertia than a modulating gas burner, which the choice to control by incoming air temperature rather than by power gives away. A solid fuel has to be stored and handled. And with two employees, the industrial and service risk is high: a company in its commercialization phase, not an established supplier. The measurements come from the company, with no independent counter-test.
