In-depth country profile: production, varieties, classification, history, current situation and points still uncertain. Region: Africa.

Introduced at the start of the 20th century, Rwandan coffee has had a difficult history, then a patient reconstruction: after 1994, the cooperatives organized themselves and chose quality. The country, landlocked and mountainous, grows almost exclusively arabica, at high altitude.

This is coffee growing by very small producers, hundreds of thousands of families on small areas. Shade is carefully managed, erosion is fought, and the selection of beans is meticulous. Since 2008, Rwanda has organized its own Cup of Excellence, which has done a great deal for its reputation.

    History and today

    History

Coffee was introduced to Rwanda at the start of the twentieth century, under colonial administration.

The orchard was not built by a research institute but by missions: it was missionaries who chose the trees. The selections that still make up the country bear their mark.

    • MibiriziChosen by the missionaries in the 1930s, at the mission of the same name. Described as of exceptional quality, but very sensitive to disease: the best in the cup is here the most fragile in the field.
    • Bourbon Mayaguez 139Came from Puerto Rico at the same time, that is, in the 1930s.
    • JacksonCame from Kenya, the neighbor that was then selecting its own lineages.
    • HararIntroduced in 1956, the latest of this group.

The exact year of introduction is not established by the sources consulted. The decade is known, not the date.World Coffee Research, Coffee Varieties Catalog 2025, Mibirizi, Bourbon Mayaguez 139, Jackson, Harar profiles; Country Profiles, Marco De Sousa Rosa, 2026

    • Rwandan coffee is one of the rare cases where an agricultural sector has entered the historical analysis of a genocide. Coffee accounted for up to three quarters of the country's exports
    • the state set the price paid to growers and lived off the margin. The collapse of the quotas in 1989 halved the world price and ruined the growers
    • historians of the 1994 genocide count this bankruptcy among its conditions. Reconstruction then came through coffee: the washing stations built after 2000 made Rwanda a specialty origin, and the country has organized its own Cup of Excellence since 2008.

    Today

The volume at the head of the profile, 256,000 bags, is that of the profile (ICO 2009). The country grows almost exclusively Bourbon arabica, between 1,300 and 2,400 meters, with hundreds of thousands of families on very small areas. Processing is the wet process with drying on raised tables, the African model; shade is carefully managed, erosion is fought, and the sorting of beans is meticulous.

    • The precise year of the introduction of coffee to Rwanda is not established by the sources consulted.
    • No production volume after 2009 could be sourced.
    • The link between the collapse of the coffee price and the genocide is a link of condition established by academic work, not a demonstrated causality; the authors cited present it as one factor among others.
    • The number of washing stations in operation today is not documented here.
